Best and worst places to hang a mirror

September 22, 2020 by Linda Holt 1 Comment

In this week’s Two Tip Tuesday decorating tip I discuss the best and worst places to hang a mirror. For my photography tip I discuss photographing during the time of the day called the Golden Hour.

To view my short IG video about photographing with Golden Hour light you can pop over to IG and watch it in full on IG TV.

Best Places to hang a mirror

The first thing you should consider when hanging a mirror is to be aware of what the mirror is reflecting. Ideally, you want the mirror reflecting something beautiful. A beautiful view, a nice focal point or perhaps a great piece of artwork.

1. Hang mirrors where you use them

It goes without saying that mirrors should be placed where used. Bathrooms and bedrooms are obvious choices. Mirrors should be hung at a comfortable height so that you are not bending down to see yourself.

Where to hang decorative mirrors though can be more challenging.

2. Hang a mirror so it reflects something attractive

In this dinning room the mirror over the side board reflects both a custom chandelier and a beautiful piece of art.

3. Hang a mirror opposite a window or glass doorway to reflect the light.

A mirror can act as another window if it is hung adjacent to or on the opposite wall of another light source such as a window or glass door.

4. Hanging a mirror too high up on the wall

The reflection will be the top of the opposite wall and the ceiling. Better to hang a piece of artwork over a tall mantle and hang the mirror somewhere else.

5. Hanging a mirror in a narrow hallway

If there is no natural light for the mirror to reflect then a dark narrow hallway is also not a good spot to hang a mirror.

6. Hanging a mirror to reflect something unattractive

My least favorite place to hang a mirror is when it is reflecting something unattractive such in a mudroom reflecting coats, backpacks and clutter. Every time you pass by it will be a reminder of the mess it is reflecting.

So the bottom line is, hang a mirror where it will reflect some light to brighten up your room and make sure what it is reflecting is attractive to look at.

If you had told me a year ago what my year was about to become I wouldn’t have believed it. We hear the cliche over and over but it’s so true. Live your best life TODAY because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Today’s photo was taken at the American party. It was almost like an out of body experience because I had never attended such a glamorous and over the top event. I will always treasure this memory and I hope to get back to travel soon and make more wonderful memories.

The storage unit is gone and we have very little storage space in our unit. I had to let go of literally thousands of items. The process took a full year but I now consider myself a decluttering expert. In this week’s post I share what worked and what didn’t. Link above in bio.

Before we moved close to the city we lived around the corner from the most picturesque farm. Often times when it snowed I would jump in the car with my iphone to shoot some pretty snow photos. Shooting falling snow is not easy. My photography tip when attempting to capture falling snow is to use a fast shutter speed. To get this photo I used the Camera + app. I chose a fast shutter speed so the snow was clearly visible against the white barn.
